mitoNEET as a therapeutic target for mitigating ischemic brain injury following MCAO

Description: PROGRAM NARRATIVE The proposed research is relevant to public health as an urgent medical need exists to develop novel therapeutics to improve post-stroke recovery by mitigating the severity of ischemic brain damage. A unique therapeutic target, mitoNEET, has been identified and a novel tool, NL-1, has been developed to gain a better understanding of how mitoNEET modulation reduces stroke neuropathology and improves functional outcomes in aged male and female rats following MCAO. The proposed research is relevant to the missions of the NIA and NINDS by conducting basic science research aimed at improving the devastating effects caused by acute ischemic stroke and is relevant to the NIH by improving health by developing a library of compounds that can be employed as tools, probes and possibly therapeutics that will improve health through innovative research.
