Mechanisms of defective mitophagy and cellular senescence in HIV associated COPD
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE HIV Tat promotes chronic inflammation and is an independent risk factor for COPD even when accounting for smoking status but the mechanism by which HIV promotes COPD is not known. This proposal provides preliminary data to show that an altered microRNAome by HIV Tat may serve as an initiating event predisposing to impaired mitophagy and development of senescence phenotype thereby promoting chronic inflammation which is a halmark of COPD. The proposal will relate the altered microRNAome to downstream effects culminating in release of proinflammatory cytokines and propose therapeutics to arrest or reverse lung function deceline in HIV associated COPD.
