Mechanosensing and Mechanotransduction in the Endothelial Nucleus

Description: Narrative: The nucleus serves as the point of convergence for forces experienced by cells and responds by regulating transcription that drive changes in cell states. How endothelial nuclear integrity is affected by physical forces, such as blood flow remains incompletely understood, yet these effects likely contribute to the initiation and progression of vascular diseases. The proposed work will involve in-depth characterization of changes in aortic endothelial nuclei under disturbed/oscillatory flow and the role of the viscoelastic intermediate filament, vimentin, in protecting the endothelial nucleus from the deleterious effects of fluid flow.
