Dietary Sodium, Neurovascular Dysfunction and Cerebrovascular Risk
Description: Dementia remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and high levels of salt in the diet have emerged as a factor that increases the risk of developing cognitive impairment. The present application seeks to find out how a diet rich in salt acts on brain vessels and leads to accumulation in the brain of the protein tau, a major culprit in Alzheimer’s disease. The proposed studies open the way to new approaches to protect the brain from the harmful effects of excessive dietary salt.
