Microbial therapy improves gut permeability to reduce cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease
Description: Narrative Aging remains the most significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and has recently been linked to gastrointestinal health of older people. Our study will examine connections between intestinal and brain inflammation, in mouse models of aging and AD, to determine how these connections affect aging-related cognitive decline and AD pathology. The proposed studies will determine whether increased gut permeability due to loss of the intestine’s protective mucus barrier accelerates aging-related cognitive decline and AD, and whether a new probiotic therapy, LpD3-5, can reverse these processes.
