Defining the interactions of senescent immune cells and skeletal cells
Description: Cellular senescence has been shown to contribute to age-related bone loss. In this project, we propose to define the interactions between senescent immune cells and skeletal cells, testing our central hypothesis that senescence of immune cells contributes to skeletal deterioration and conversely, senescent skeletal cells attract and contribute to an inflammatory and/or senescent phenotype of immune cells. In addition to defining underlying mechanisms, these studies may identify novel therapeutic targets to prevent, or reverse, age- related osteoporosis.
