Mentoring patient-oriented research to improve cardiovascular health among people with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV (PWH) including in sub-Saharan Africa where approximately 70% of the global population of PWH reside. However, CVD screening and prevention remains extremely limited in practice in that region, due in part to lack of patient-oriented research (POR) on diagnostic modalities and locally-derived risk prediction criteria. Dr. Mark Siedner is a clinician scientist and emerging leader in research on CVD among PWH who has an extensive track record of scientific mentorship in patient-oriented clinical research. This award will provide him the protected time and support to 1) develop a POR mentoring program on CVD research focused on PWH in sub- Saharan Africa, 2) grow the careers of promising scientists in this area, and 3) identify optimal CVD screening algorithms and risk prediction scores for PWH in the region.
