Resetting the Clock in HIV associated COPD

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE: People living with HIV demonstrate increased lung inflammation and higher incidence of COPD even when adjusted for the smoking status, and disruption of the lung molecular clock has been implicated in elevated lung inflammation associated with COPD and tobacco smoke exposure. We will determine the role of lung molecular clock dysfunction in HIV associated COPD, with therapeutic leads to reset the molecular clock and help reduce underlying inflammation and/or arrest the decline in lung function in HIV smokers/COPD. Understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms by which HIV disrupts the lung molecular clock will provide therapeutic targets for HIV-associated COPD.
