Viable Microvessels for the Study of the Microvasculature in Alzheimer's Disease

Description: Viable human brain microvessels (MV) provide a novel opportunity to examine anatomic and functional changes related to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and, more importantly, test the effect of interventions that have therapeutic implications. We find that MV freshly isolated from the brains of recently deceased human subjects with and without dementia are viable for up to 10 days in 3D matrix. The goal of this grant is to use these viable MV to determine cellular and biochemical fidelity to their original donor MV and brain tissues, and to define the MV response to pericyte depletion.
