Social Networks, HIV Stigma, and the HIV Care Cascade in Rural Uganda
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The proposed research is relevant to public health because it is aimed at providing detailed understanding about the processes that cause and sustain negative attitudes toward PLHIV in an HIV-endemic setting, and about the causal mechanisms underlying their adverse impacts on the HIV prevention and treatment cascade. Thus the findings are expected to enhance HIV prevention and treatment efforts in resource-limited settings worldwide. The proposed research is relevant to the mission of the NIH, as it is proposed in direct response to PA-13-248 (“Research to Characterize and Reduce Stigma to Improve Health”). The proposed research is directly relevant to NIH HIV/AIDS Research Priorities on increasing HIV testing and entry into prevention services among persons at risk for HIV, and improving treatment outcomes among persons living with HIV.
