DNA-based materials for applications in nanomedicine
Description: With aging - and in several high prevalence diseases such as heart failure, osteoarthritis and periodontitis - the connective tissues undergo critical structural alterations, leading to loss of organ function, disability and in some cases, death. Over 40% of deaths in North America are associated with diseases that target connective tissues. These diseases are associated with loss of function, greatly increased mortality, and pain, and pose major challenges for a health care system that already consumes >11% of Ontario's gross domestic product. My research program develops materials for the regeneration of mineralized tissues. There is a crucial need for new, effective treatments for these diseases, especially in Ontario where our health-care system is struggling to preserve the health of aging populations. In this project, we aim to develop highly organized DNA-based materials capable of repairing damaged mineralized tissue.
