Harnessing Redox Regulation of Proteasome Function to Promote Healthy Aging
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE An increase in the concentration of reactive oxygen species has been thought to be a mechanism promoting development of the biology of aging for over half a century, however, technical limitations have until recently substantially limited investigation of this hypothesis. This proposal will develop preliminary findings that identified specific targets of reactive oxygen species which influence aging phenotypes through post-translational regulation of proteins by cysteine oxidation. Upon completion, this study will establish mechanism(s) and produce resources outlining how reactive oxygen species influence the biology of aging which can leveraged to develop new strategies to promote healthy aging.
