Unravelling the Role of Epigenetics and Cytokines in Type 2 Diabetes among African-ancestry Populations
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE African Americans and African migrants in Europe are more likely to have type 2 diabetes compared to their European ancestry compatriots and the rates of diabetes in Africa are rising rapidly. The candidate proposes to apply novel genetic epidemiological approaches to large datasets of African Americans and sub-Saharan Africans to provide evidence regarding the role of epigenetics and circulating cytokines in type 2 diabetes. Improved understanding of the mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes in Africans is imperative to guide both prevention and treatment efforts that promote ethnic health equity.
