Abstract: The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid \nTropics (ICRISAT) began a cooperative research program in \n1976 with the principal Malian government agency responsible \nfor agricultural research, the Institut d’economie rurale (IER). \nThe program aimed to establish a strong national infrastructure \nfor long-term research on sorghum and pearl millet and their \ncropping systems, including both long- and short-term training. \nThe program was established with a 1-year grant from the Ford \nFoundation, after which funding was assumed by the United \nStates Agency for International Development (USAID). \nThis report summarizes the activities and achievements of \nthe ICRISAT-Mali program over its 12-year life.
