The Oxford Handbook of the History of Nationalism
Year: 2013
Type: book
Abstract: The chapters in this handbook look at the history of nationalism in its different aspects as political movement, cultural movement, ideas and ideologies, sentiments, and senses of identity. The chapters on nationalist political movements are organized by regions of the world and divided between nationalism before and after nation-state formation. The history of nationalism as culture, ideas, and sentiments are treated thematically, dealing both with the emergence of nationalism and its subsequent consolidation as the most important political idea of modern times. Finally there are chapters considering the historical relationship between nationalism and other ideas, movements, and processes such as religion, socialism, race, international relations, globalization, and historiography. Appendices of chronologies and of maps are designed to help the reader link the history of nationalism to the modern development of a world of nation-states.
