Abstract: The purpose of this paper has been to discuss assertions in the mindfulness literature on how mindfulness leads to affect regulation. The approach has been to look for hypotheses found in the mindfulness literature on how mindfulness leads to affect regulation. Electronic searches and reference lists in relevant books and articles was used. Based on the literature, twelve hypotheses on how mindfulness leads to affect regulation have been suggested; it increases awareness and focused attention, it broadens our perspective, it cultivates acceptance, it gives us training in letting emotions pass, it cultivates self-compassion, it cultivates awareness of human prejudices, it decreases rumination, it cultivates taking a decentered approach, it reshapes the brain, it cultivates the ability to let go, it increases desensitization, and it disentangles us from habits. The conclusion in this paper is that mindfulness can function as an affect regulator in several ways. Mindfulness can be a tool to connect with the balance, harmony and peace that exist within us. However, more research is needed, to better understand the underlying mechanisms.
