Abstract: T he com plete nucleotide sequence of the LPD 1 gene, w hich encodes the lipoam ide dehydrogenase com ponent (E3) of the pyruvate dehydrogenase and 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogen ase m ultienzym e com plexes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been established.T he flanking region 5' to the LPD 1 gene contains D N A sequences w hich show homology to know n control sites found upstream of other yeast genes.T he prim ary structure o f the protein, determ ined from the D N A sequence, shows strong homology to a group of flavoproteins including Escherichia coli lipoam ide dehydrogenase and pig heart lipoam ide dehydrogenase.T he am ino acid sequence also reveals the presence of a potential targeting sequence at its N -term inus w hich m ay facilitate tran sp o rt to and entry into m itochondria.
