Abstract: Although Transit Oriented Developments (TODs) are viewed as a means of reducing private car usage and increasing the use of sustainable modes of transport like walking, cycling and public transport; very little proof has been found. To prove this assumption travel data from various TODs need to be studied. As a beginning to this approach, this study aims to determine a suitable methodology for collecting travel data for visitors of a TOD and presents the findings from preliminary data analysis of a case study TOD. This paper demonstrates the methodology followed and observations made while conducting travel surveys for visitors of the case study TOD. The travel characteristics of visitors are explained with the help of mode shares and trip lengths obtained from the preliminary data analysis. The results showed that 71% of shoppers, 42% of retail shop employees and 50% of professional employees travelled by sustainable modes of transport.
