Spanish subjects can be subjects: Acquisitional and empirical evidence

Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: The paper provides novel converging acquisitional and empirical\n\t\t\t\t evidence from Spanish in support of the hypothesis that preverbal subjects\n\t\t\t\t in Spanish can, but need not, be left-dislocated constituents in the CP layer;\n\t\t\t\t they can occupy the canonical subject position, Spec,TP, contrary to what is\n\t\t\t\t often assumed in the literature. On the basis of acquisitional and statistical\n\t\t\t\t evidence gathered from a longitudinal study of five children, the paper\n\t\t\t\t argues against Grinstead’s (1998 et seq.) claim that overt subjects emerge in\n\t\t\t\t development concurrently with less controversially CP-related phenomena\n\t\t\t\t such as wh-questions and dislocations. Moreover, based on the different\n\t\t\t\t distributional behavior of genuine subjects and dislocations/foci in the\n\t\t\t\t context of desiderative/exhortative sentences introduced by que ‘that,’ the\n\t\t\t\t paper argues that Spec,TP/AgrSP is indeed available in Spanish and can\n\t\t\t\t only host bona fide subjects to the exclusion of non-subject XPs.
