Abstract: The authors offer guidelines for research on the first stages of long-term dynamic psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder. On the basis of five successfully treated cases, the authors outline methods for measuring the effectiveness, at different points in therapy, of psychotherapeutic treatment for borderline personality disorder.
