Abstract: Epidemiological work has shown that visceral adiposity is strongly related to metabolic disorders including insulin resistance. What regulates visceral fat deposition and why it is so metabolically deleterious remains largely unclear.Recent data suggest that the gastrointestinal tract may be a central player in the development of visceral fat accumulation and metabolic syndrome. An impaired gut barrier function, as a consequence of inflammation and/or altered microbiota composition, increases the leak of microbial molecules and their metabolites to the adjacent mesenteric fat resulting in hypertrophy and inflammation of the fat depot.Subsequently, the increased efflux of fatty acids and pro-inflammatory factors in the portal vein leads to liver dysfunction and systemic insulin resistance.
