Geometrical Optics and Riemannian Geometry

Year: 1996
Type: article
Abstract: The methods of differential geometry are used with the assumption that rays of light follow geodesic trajectories in a space whose metric is determined by the refraction index. Keeping this in mind, we show that these hypotheses are equivalent to the Fermat's Principle for a ray that is propagated in a heterogeneous medium. By applying the methods of differential geometry, the well-known Maxwell's Fisheye problem is solved.
