Cartógrafos y clérigos Misiones geodésicas y religiosas en el conocimiento geográfico del Ecuador (Siglos XVIII-XX)
Year: 2010
Type: article
Abstract: Between 1901 and 1906, a team of French military geographers visited\nEcuador to conduct the second geodesic survey of the arc of the equatorial\nmeridian, an effort that commemorated an eighteenth-century project while\nseeking to foment goodwill between the two republics. This article considers\nthe role of the Catholic Church, then under assault by the secularizing agenda\nof Ecuadors Liberal administration, as both facilitator of the missions efforts\nas well as a cultural interlocutor communicating a local intellectual tradition,\nwhich I term the messianic-nationalist gaze. In particular, it traces the colonial\nroots of this cartographic sacralization, which features the redemption of the\ncountrys Amazonian indigenous communities, while at the same time articulating\na defense of Ecuadorian territorial control of this disputed region.
