Abstract: Reports of scientific studies on hunger and starvation undertaken by 28 Jewish physicians of the Warsaw ghetto from 1940 are fragmented and incomplete. The untimely death of the principal investigators, loss of the manuscript and eventual mass deportation of the Warsaw Jews inhibited completion until the present. Clinical, metabolic, and pathological consequences of hunger were investigated using subjects carefully selected to represent pure hunger disease without complicating infections. Studies were based on 3 considerations: 1. importance of the information; 2. expertise of the investigators; 3. possibility of carrying out the studies under existing conditions. The editor cites the studies on stimulus-response, carbohydrate metabolism, acid base balance, circulatory and blood changes, oculatory disturbances and gross organ change studies as particularly noteworthy
