Abstract: The essay wants to show how the second Abbasid caliph, al-Mansur, chose to legitimate his power outside the Islamic religious background, through a political theory present in that geographical area since many centuries, namely, that the ruler is divinely appointed as the Universal Monarch to govern the whole world. This theory was directly borrowed from the Imperial Sassanid Tradition; this is why I try to show the vicinity and appeal of the Persian culture to Islam, and the participation of many Persians in the Abbasid revolution that defeated the Umayyads.
