Abstract: This study was designed to test the use of CD-ROM storybook programs' effects on preschool aged children's emergent literacy. 73 four-year-old children, divided into three study groups (experimental, control and well-read-to control) all enrolled in a Head Start program were given the opportunity to use CD-ROM storybooks during their free-choice time for approximately eight weeks. At the end of the trial period, the experimental group was compared with the control group and with their well-read-to peers. Results indicated that CD-ROM storybook programs may have a significant effect on the emergent reading skills of those children who are not as well-read-to prior to entering school.
