Abstract: One particularly useful way of addressing the issue of adequacy of constraints is the construction of factorial typologies. If we compare factorial typologies on the criterion of how closely they match actually attested stress systems, we may find reasons to prefer one set of constraints over the other. Gaps in factorial typologies often diagnose imperfections in the constraint set.
