Chronic administration of oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for acne vulgaris.
Year: 2011
Type: article
Abstract: The treatment of acne vulgaris (AV) is a constantly evolving subject in dermatology as new data emerges. Conventional therapies, including use of oral antibiotic agents, must be updated regularly due to concerns regarding changes in antibiotic resistance patterns, optimal use in combination with other acne therapies, applicability for patients recalcitrant to other AV treatments, and new information regarding side effects or drug interactions. The availability of efficacious alternative oral antibiotics for AV, such as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), are important for the clinician, allowing for strategic application in specific cases. This article serves as a concise guide for TMP-SMZ use for AV, including a review of possible adverse side effects.
