Abstract: A police van pulls into the receiving area at thecourt. Some men in handcuffs are pulledfrom the van, and shoved into the general lock-up. "Get your butt in there, you dumbfuck," yells a deputy sheriff, an African-American male, at alaggard. "We haven't got all dayfor your sorry ass." The prisoneris also African-American. He wipes sleep from his eyes as he gropes for a placeon a hard bench along the wall.
