Abstract: Folk tales are a valuable means of socializing children into the accepted cultural practices and beliefs in any given society. They are designed to entertain but also "to reflect and disclose our cultural presuppositions and values" (Toolan 1998:164). However, just what these values are depends on the nature and priorites of the culture in which they occur.
