Year: 2012
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study aims at examining the relationship between psychological distress, hope and gender variables and attitudes toward seeking psychological help among a sample of undergraduate students (n=286). Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that (a) Gender (male) (b) lower level of hope (Paths / the effective strategies geared to achieving the goals), predicted negative attitudes toward seeking psychological help accounted for 17% of variance in attitudes toward seeking psychological help, Moreover, paths moderated significantly the relationship between interpersonal distress and the attitudes toward openness in the psychological help process. Finally, te results showed that females in different levels of distress exhibited more favorable attitudes to seek help from counseling &mental health professionals than males, likely due to their positive attitudes concerning confidence in counselors, openness, and need recognition. Specifically, results from this study suggest that negative attitudes related to need recognition and psychological openness might contribute to men’s avodence of counseling and mental health services. The study includes implications for interventions and future research recommendations..
