Abstract: The concept and practice of the mixed development of land and buildings use has gained currency in planning and design fields and is widely promoted in urban policy as a model for achieving compact city and high‐density objectives. Mixed use purports to meet environmental sustainability goals in maximizing scarce land while adapting to the breakdown between the previously zoned separation of building use in temporal, social, and economic terms. This chapter interrogates the pursuit of mixed use in the context of the quality of life and environmental effects on residents through an in‐depth survey of an exemplar mixed‐use neighborhood in London's city fringe.
