The Effect of Dietary Restriction on Aging: 2. The Hypotheses
Year: 2011
Type: article
Abstract: It has been widely known that dietary restriction is the only natural way to delay or retard the aged-related deterioration of nearly all biological systems in a variety of species. However, it seems that up to present the exact mechanisms which underpin such a diverse physiological effect of dietary restriction remain uncertain. Several hypotheses which attempt to elucidate the mechanisms have been put forward. These include retardation of growth, reduction of body fat, cell survival, attenuation of insulin-like signalling, reduced metabolic rate, and reduced oxidative damage hypotheses. Nevertheless, more studies are required to test these hypotheses. Keywords: food restriction, caloric restriction, hypothesis, aging
