Authoring multimedia clinical problem-solving exercises with CaseBase.

Abstract: The use of problem-solving exercises is of particular interest in medical education. These exercises introduce the students to the same situations faced by clinicians and illustrate how to handle them. The students are given realistic data-preferably in the same form seen and heard by clinicians-and learn basic medical knowledge in the context of simulated clinical practice. One of the problems faced by medical educators is how to present this information in a way that enables the student to see the relationships among the vast amounts of knowledge. CaseBase is a system that presents to the student a case study with realistic multimedia renditions of clinical images, sounds, and other data and provides access to related medical knowledge-based findings [1]. CaseBase was introduced one year ago and has been used at more than a dozen institutions around the world. The topics covered by the cases range from cardiovascular pathophysiology to embryology to neurology.
