Abstract: Since World War II the United States has instituted and maintained a variety of foreign assistance programs. Table 1 divides these program among three general categories--military assistace, economic assistance, and export-promotion loans--and inditactes how these programs have evoloved from 1946 to 1978. As these categories suggect, U.S. foreign assistance serves several distinct objectives. In the immediate postwar period, refugee relief and economic recontrsutrction in Europe were the main priorities. Military and trategiv objectives predominated during the 1950s, but the objectives of promoting economic devleopment in low-income countries and explanding U.S> exports gained greatly in importance in the early 1960s.
