Abstract: This study's aim was to investigate whether self-determined behaviour \nand achievement motivation impact learner's academic performance. \nConvenient geographic sampling was used to select three pnmary \nschools in Soshanguve. A likert type questionnaire was used to collect \ndata from 120 learners. Item analyses were preformed to investigate the \nreliability of subscales. \nThree hypotheses were tested using analysis of variance and Pearson \nproduct moment correlations. The first, which predicted that intrinsic \nmotivation is positively related to academic achievement, was not \nsupported. Both intrinsically and extrinsically motivated learners \nachieved better in academic tasks than amotivated learners. The second, \nwhich predicted a negative correlation between extrinsic motivation \nextrinsic motivation and academic performance, was also not supported. \nThe third, which predicted that there is a negative correlation between \namotivation and academic performance, was confirmed. \nGeneral conclusions, recommendations, and limitations of the study are \ndiscussed.
