Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect of antagonists maximum pre-activity (PA) on the max isometric tension (Tmax) and electromyographic signal (EMG). Volunteers were 10 male subjects with 23.1 ± 3 years old, practitioners of strength training for at least 6 months. The first day was held familiarization on Tmax test on the load cell in the seated row exercise (RA). On the second day was applied the protocol of Tmax through push-up exercise (PU) followed by the Tmax in RA. On the descriptive statistics was calculated the mean and standard deviation of the variables. In the inferential statistics was applied the paired T test to compare the percentage of Tmax and root mean square (RMS) of EMG activity of the anterior deltoid (AD), posterior deltoid (PD), latissimus dorsi (LD) and clavicular pectoralis (CP) by adopting a p <0.05. In the results, there was no statistically significant difference in mean Tmax 34.2 ± 11.7kgf without pre-activation (pre) and 32.5 ± 12 kgf after pre-activation of antagonists (post). Regarding the EMG signal, the agonist muscles in the course of RA there was a reduction in the percentage of the RMS for PD on pré (%)62±45.8% and post 59.5±4, as well as for the LD in pré 6.5±10 and post 17.5± 7.6%, however, the reduction was not significant. Therefore, the PA does not seem to interfere with the Tmax and EMG of the agonists, although, more studies are needed to understand the neural mechanisms involved in the power output.
