Abstract: Abstra t. The in\nreasing need of small knowledge-intensive \nompanies for loosely-\noupled \nollaboration and ad-ho\n knowledge sharing has led to a strong requirement for an alternative approa\nh to developing knowledge management systems. This paper proposes a framework for managing organisational knowledge that builds on a so\nio-te\nhni\nal perspe\ntive and \nonsiders people as well as te\nhnology as two highly inter\nonne\nted \nomponents. We introdu\ne a \non\neptualised system ar\nhite\nture that merges enterprise so\nial software \nhara\nteristi\ns from the realm of Enterprise 2.0, and information pro\nessing te\nhniques from the domain of Semanti\n Web te\nhnologies. In order to deliver a KM approa\nh that \nould assist in redu\ning the so\nio-te\nhni\nal gap, we suggest deploying su\nh a solution using an integrated so\niote\nhni\nal implementation methodology. Key words: knowledge management, so\nio-te\nhni\nal approa\nh, SMEs, enterprise so\nial software, semanti\n web te\nhnologies, system ar\nhite\nture 1. Introdu\ntion. The majority of today's enterprise knowledge management tools, te\nhniques and metho-dologies have been developed with large rms in mind [25℄, and thus adhere to requirements that are inevitably in oni\nt with the pe\nuliarities of small knowledge-intensive \nompanies [12℄. Current Knowledge Management (KM) systems are not only expensive to pur\nhase, but also require the \nommitment of signi \n ant resour\nes to their deployment, maintenan\ne, and daily operation. The amount of eort required for performing a\ntivities ore to KM systems, su\nh as designing taxonomies, \n lassifying information, and monitoring fun\ntionality [33℄
