Abstract: The International Diabetes Federation indicated diabetes self-management education is the right of all people with diabetes. Diabetes self-management is hard, relentless work and is required throughout the person’s life. People require individualised education and health professional and family support to effectively manage their diabetes. Self-management education is more likely to be effective if it is implemented as part of a comprehensive care plan, takes account of the individual’s situation and actively involves them in care decisions. Significantly, people with diabetes who never received diabetes education have a fourfold increased risk of complications compared to those who received education.
