Improve Privacy in Research by Eliminating Informed Consent? IOM Report Misses the Mark
Year: 2009
Type: article
Abstract: In February 2009, the Institute of Medicine released its report on privacy in health research, Beyond the Privacy Rule: Enhancing Privacy, Improving Health Through Research. The report is based on formal presentations, commissioned and invited surveys and papers, a literature review, and deliberations by the Committee on Health Research and the Privacy of Health Information: The HIPAA Privacy Rule. The Committee was charged with addressing the often-expressed concern of researchers that the Privacy Rule burdens research without adequately protecting the privacy interests of patients and subjects.
