Exploring Technical and Behavioral Aspects for Public Motion Controlled Applications' Development Using 3D TOF Camera
Year: 2010
Type: article
Abstract: Context: Remarkable advances in multimedia\ngames can be seen during recent years. In this\nthesis a novel way of playing games, merely using\nhuman body parts, is under consideration just like\nXBOX Natal concept [2]. To implement this idea, a\nnewly made 3D Time-Of-Flight (TOF) camera is\nused to capture the motions i.e. gestures and\npostures of moving objects.\nObjective: In this thesis two major research\nquestions are addressed. One is to find out the\npossible usages and limitations of three dimensional\n(3D) motion controlled interfaces for Public\nInteractive Application (PIAs). Second one more\ntechnological question is to find out possible and\nfeasible solutions and programming techniques to\ncapture motion using 3D TOF camera.\nMethod: Qualitative research method along with\nContextual Inquiry is used to gather and analyze\ndata. Literature study, interviews and some\nexplorations on relevant technology blogs (and\nforums) were made. Some inspirations were taken\nfrom Grounded theory method to analyze collected\ndata.\nResults: This thesis explores possible usages of TOF\ncamera to develop motion controlled PIAs along\nwith limitations with respect to the potential users.\nA detailed solution for 3D motion capturing is\nsuggested, which consists of the Visual C++.NET,\nWin32 Application and OpenCV libraries\nsynchronized by EmguCV wrapper.\nConclusion: This report provides a detailed study\nabout the possibilities and limitations of using\nmotion controlled interfaces in public areas.\nValuable ideas providing extensive usage and future\nfertility of this nascent technology have also been\ndescribed. Findings in this report can provide\nconstructive principles for development of public\ninteractive applications.
