Abstract: The population increase in Mexico has demanded an increase of the drinking water and sewer nets. This has\nbrought the construction of waste water treatment plants (WWTP), a fact that has generated more waste water\ntreatment and, at the same time, an increase of the waste sludge produced. Waste sludge is an environmental\nproblem given the quantities, volumes and contamination it generates. Sludge can be used to produce electric\nenergy, though, by the use of anaerobic digestion systems. For instance Mexico alone generates about 640.000\ntons of waste sludge a year. The scope of this article is to analyze from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, at a world\nscale, the use of biosolids to produce energy and be the basis to develop such type of projects in Mexico.
