Continued Use of Technology: Combining Controlled and Automatic Processes
Year: 2010
Type: preprint
Abstract: This study investigates factors influencing individual users’ continued use of technology, or technology continuance. Technology continuance is defined as individual user’s continued employment of system. We consider mobile computing technology as a particular example for the investigation. In this paper, we first review the theoretical backgrounds based on the literature of post-adoption studies. Then we develop a research framework which considers both controlled and automatic processes. In particular, a person’s technology continuance is determined by both continuance intention and habit. In the continued use of technology, intention can be influenced by satisfaction of previous experiences, which are affected by cognitive and affective beliefs; and beliefs and satisfaction are also influenced by confirmation of prior expectation. Habit, which is also influenced by satisfaction, can affect the continuance usage behavior. A research design was developed, and the research model will be empirically tested by a survey with mobile computing technology users.
