Abstract: Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is a respiratory disorder affecting children and adults. It can be defined as an alteration in the normal biomechanical patterns of breathing that results in intermittent or chronic symptoms.DB is characterised by irregular breathing patterns involving inefficient, excessive upper chest wall activity, and may or may not involve an upper airway abnormality such as paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction (pVCD).DB is difficult to identify due to the similarity of presentation and co-existence with other respiratory disorders. There is also a lack of suitable assessment techniques , which impacts on diagnosis and the efficacy of treatment provided.Clinical experience indicates that breathing retraining reduces or ameliorates the substantial burden of morbidity associated with the condition. However, a systematic review revealed no evidence to support or refute this observation.
