Study on the variation in dielectric properties of heterogeneous substrates composed of nanomaterials
Year: 2011
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: An analytical study of heterogeneous substrates\ncreated by including small particles arranged in a cubic lattice\nwithin a host medium is presented in this paper. Rapid advances\nin nanomaterial fabrication techniques will allow in the near\nfuture, heterogeneous samples to be created with nano or microsized\ninclusions, and this paper investigates the electromagnetic\n(EM) properties of these structures. Analytical equations by\nvarious authors for the effective permittivity and permeability of\nsuch artificial materials have been analysed and compared over\nmicrowave frequencies. The particle size, spacing and frequency\nwere examined individually to understand their role in\ndetermining the effective EM parameters of the heterogeneous\nmixture. Furthermore, results from FDTD simulations with\nmicro-sized cuboids were processed using an inverse scattering\nalgorithm to obtain the effective permittivity and permeability of\nthese heterogenous structures using a complimentary technique.\nThe canonical formulations showed reasonable agreement with\nthe EM simulations and the two methods can be used to design\nnovel dielectric substrates.
