A historical and economic perspective on Sir John Charnley, Chas F. Thackray Limited, and the early arthoplasty industry.
Year: 2005
Type: article
Abstract: In the 1960s, Sir John Charnley pioneered modern total hip arthroplasty (THA) and spent the next two decades refining all aspects of the procedure, working with the commercial firm of Chas F. Thackray Limited, now a subsidiary of DePuy Orthopaedics, a Johnson and Johnson Company. We review here that relationship, in light of the complex relationships today that exist among industry, researchers, surgeons, and the public.
