The pigmented road ahead - success through collaboration

Abstract: The pigmented road ahead -success through collaborationIt is 23 years since the inaugural issue of Pigment Cell Research was published with the goal, as stated by founding Editor Joe Bagnara, 'to provide the best possible forum for the dissemination of new knowledge gained at the frontiers of research into pigmentation'.Through the vision and hard work of the subsequent Editors-in-Chief, Takuji Takeuchi, Jiro Matsumoto, Vince Hearing and Colin Goding, the journal has undergone a transformation at every level. The natural integration of melanoma and pigment cell research, the inclusion of new sections, and the increasing quality of its research and reviews have made Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research (PCMR) the primary publication forum for the pigment and melanoma research communities. As new Editor-in-Chief (EiC), commencing with this issue, I intend to continue the work of the former EiCs, and in particular, Colin Goding, who initiated my involvement with the journal and the integration of the melanoma and pigment fields, and who led the journal to its current excellence. My own research, which has focused on signal transduction in melanoma, now includes analysis of key pigmentation genes which are part of rewired signaling pathways in melanoma. This integration is also evident in conferences that actively merge the pigment and melanoma disciplines through discussion among researchers from both communities. At the same time, we are fortunate to be part of a technical revolution that enables a global view of diseases.Accordingly, PCMR will highlight our advances of the melanoma genome project, the melanoma metabolome, as well as discoveries in prevention and therapy for malignant and non-malignant skin diseases. As incoming editor, I will strive to further improve the journal and expand its audience, while serving both the pigment and melanoma communities.Over the past year we have implemented an online submission system and expedited the review and publication process. The average review is now complete within 14 days, and online publication occurs within 72 hours of acceptance. This could not have been achieved without the concerted efforts of the publisher and the editorial assistant, and the timely work of our dedicated reviewers. The PCMR review process has also been modified to enable greater involvement of the Executive Editors (EE), Glenn Merlino and Heinz Arnheiter, leading experts in melanoma and pigment cell research.Review
