Identities and Indignities: Liberalism, Multiculturalism, and Critical Social Theory
Year: 2009
Type: preprint
Abstract: This paper elaborates a critical theory of social identities and identity differences and of multicultural and ecological justice. I build on Axel Honneth’s critical theory should be oriented toward revealing the various “structural forms of disrespect” in society, along with Linda Martin Alcoff’s call to address both the specificity and the intertwinement of struggles concerning social status, social class, and social identity. I examine both social identities and systematic indignities, or forms of disrespect. In addition, I call for ecological critical reflection on one category of social identity that is generally not considered in discussion of the politics of social identity and recognition: the human.
