Abstract: Theories on the development of word recognitionBelow I will present a short overview of two influential theories on the development of word recognition: Ehri's phase theory (1998) and the self-teaching hypothesis of Jorm, Share, Maclean and Matthews (1984).According to phase or stage theories, the development of skilled word reading can be characterized by a succession of different phases, or stages, in which the type of associations between the written and spoken form of words tends to change systematically. In contrast, the self-teaching hypothesis (Jorm et al., 1984;Share, 1995), describes the development of word recognition as a continuous process, albeit an item-based one. After the presentation of the two theories, it will be evaluated to what extent they provide a theoretical framework to examine and compare word-recognition processes in normal reading and dyslexic children.
