Cellular uptake of steroids

Abstract: The general concept concerning mechanism of steroid\\nhormone action includes several steps at the molecular level\\nabout which very little is known. \\xc2\\xb7For several steroid responsive\\ntissues it has been shown, that the steroid molecule\\nafter entering its target cell, becomes immediately bound by\\na "cytoplasmic receptor" which transfers the steroid into the\\nnucleus. This translocation step is temperature dependent.\\nSimultaneously the receptor part of the complex is transformed\\ninto a smaller subunit, the "nuclear receptor". In the\\nnucleus the steroid receptor complex becomes attached to an\\nacidic non histone protein, the "nuclear acceptor" site, and\\nprovokes an increase in RNA polymerase activity resulting in\\nnew RNA synthesis followed by increased protein synthesis.
